SUMMARY
At Artera, we're building the heart of modern healthcare communication. As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll be a foundational part of the ReferRum team, scaling the core messaging infrastructure that powers our flagship product: patient scheduling, referrals, and post-discharge messaging. You’ll get to experience the rapid innovation of a startup while tackling the complex challenges of a highly regulated industry.
This is a rare opportunity to move beyond writing code and into a role that is truly about architecting resilient solutions. You'll primarily focus on our back-end systems, but also contribute to front-end development, making you a crucial asset in shaping the future of our product from discovery to delivery. This role is perfect for a back-end leaning engineer who is accountable, has a passion for solving problems at scale, and the drive to build lasting solutions in a high-impact space. You are a curious and adaptable individual who can pivot quickly and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Architect, design, and lead the development of scalable, reliable, and secure back-end services for our core platform, including patient self-scheduling, messaging campaigns, and post-discharge reporting.
  • Take ownership of features from ideation through to production, tackling complex problems with a strong sense of accountability and pride in your work.
  • Collaborate with engineers and product managers across teams to understand how our products integrate with other systems and vendors, navigate technical trade-offs, and drive a cohesive product strategy.
  • Ensure high observability of production systems, proactively identifying and raising issues that arise in product or team meetings.
  • Participate in a paid on-call rotation to support production systems and ensure platform stability.
  • Contribute to front-end feature development, collaborating with designers and other engineers to deliver a seamless user experience.
  • Champion best practices in code quality, testing, and system design, mentoring junior engineers through code reviews and pair programming.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience building web applications that can handle scale.
  • Proven expertise with back-end technologies (Production expeirence in Typescript or Javascript highly preferred, but NOT required)
  • Experience in a highly regulated industry.
  • Solid understanding of relational databases, ideally Postgres.
  • Experience with on-call rotation.
  • Fluent in both spoken and written English and Hungarian.
  • Strong analytical skills with a keen attention to detail, allowing you to audit your work and think about potential problems that come up around your area of ownership.

BONUS

  • Experience with cloud technologies, preferably AWS.
  • Experience with event-based architecture, such as Kafka.
  • Proven experience mentoring junior developers and leading technical projects.
  • Experience with microservice architecture.
LOCATION
Our company HQ is in Santa Barbara, CA, USA, but we are growing our team based out of our Budapest office. We are looking for candidates that currently live in and are eligible to work in Hungary. This position will be required to come into our office in Budapest based on a limited schedule determined by the team you join.
