Insurance coverage associate
New York, NY, USA
The Role
We're helping an established, AV-rated insurance firm representing national and international insurance carriers and self-insured corporations. From their New York and New Jersey offices, the firm handles insurance coverage and insurance litigation throughout New York and New Jersey. Known for a superior reputation in insurance coverage and defense, a collaborative team-first culture, and long-tenured attorneys who have built their careers here.
They are currently hiring a mid-to-senior Insurance Coverage Associate to represent insurers in coverage analysis and litigation. This is a dedicated coverage role — not general insurance-defense or negligence work where you'll get broad, substantive, hands-on experience across a wide range of matters early, with real ownership and direct client contact.
What You'll Do
- Handle declaratory-judgment actions and coverage litigation end-to-end — pleadings, motion practice, discovery, depositions, briefs, trial support, and appeals (litigation is our busiest area, and DJ actions are growing)
- Draft coverage opinions, reservation-of-rights letters, and disclaimer/denial letters
- Analyze first- and third-party coverage, weighted toward our busiest lines — CGL, first-party property, and professional liability (E&O) — plus a growing cyber, D&O, and environmental book
- Counsel carriers on claim handling, coverage position, and bad-faith exposure
- Take ownership of your own matters while collaborating closely with partners and the team
What You Bring
- J.D. and admission to the New York bar, in good standing (required)
- 4–7 years of insurer-side insurance coverage experience (representing insurers / self-insureds)
- New Jersey admission is a plus (supports our NJ matters)
- Strong policy-interpretation, legal-writing, and analytical skills
- Comfort working directly with sophisticated carrier clients and managing matters independently
What Success Looks Like Here
The firm's most successful attorneys aren't necessarily the ones with the flashiest credentials — they're the ones who:
- Bring a strong work ethic and take genuine pride in the quality of their work
- Deliver polished work product on time, and flag issues early
- Collaborate generously — share knowledge and make the team better
- Think critically and will respectfully push back, rather than just say what we want to hear
- Bring creative, out-of-the-box solutions instead of "the way it's always been done"
- Roll up their sleeves on any task and step outside their comfort zone to grow
- Are reliable and accountable — they own outcomes and don't make excuses
- Stay positive and adaptable when priorities shift
What The Firm Offers
- Genuine mentorship and real, fast upward mobility. Partners invest in your development from day one and our doors are always open — advancement here is real and quick, including a path to partnership for the right person.
- Broad, substantive coverage work across a wide range of matters early in your career — not narrow, siloed files or years doing the same task.
- A collaborative, team-first culture with meaningful responsibility, trust, and direct client contact.
- Stability and a superior reputation in insurance coverage and defense — a firm where people build long-term careers.
- Compensation: $135,000–$165,000+ depending on experience, plus a performance bonus. Full benefits.
Interview Process
A streamlined two-step process: a virtual first interview with the hiring partner, followed by an in-person meeting at their New York office. Very quick turnaround and decision making.
