Founded in 2010, Up2Us Sports is a national nonprofit organization focused on the power of coaches to transform the lives of our nation’s most vulnerable youth, and the communities they live in, through sports. About A Place Called Home
The mission of A Place Called Home and The South Central Sports League is to provide a safe and accessible environment where young athletes of the South Central community develop technical, tactical, physical, and mental components of their game to reach the next stage in their sports journey.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Under the direction of the SCSL Program Manager, the Up2Us Athletics Coach will implement program and agency goals, REACH objectives, best practices, member accountability, curriculum development, and classroom management. This may include:
- Research, develop, and facilitate athletics curriculum and lesson plans, and adapt to the needs of each class activity.
- Provide early supervision support in the athletics spaces.
- Ensure the athletics spaces are clean and well maintained to facilitate safe play spaces on a daily basis.
- Provide coaching and mentorship to the SCSL players in each sport season.
- Manage and track daily attendance on the Apricot system and communicate with the families of members who are no longer attending APCH to invite them back to try out the athletics classes.
- Build a long-lasting rapport with members and stakeholders in order to maintain a positive environment for all.
- Wash, organize, and distribute the SCSL jerseys at SCSL games and recollect all team jerseys after each game day to be redistributed the following week.
- Complete all incident reports, behavior challenges, and referrals by the end of business day.
- Communicate with APCH’s SCSL families to remind them of game day times, changes in the schedule, or any updates.
Additionally, the Up2Us AmeriCorps Coach will:
- Encourage participants to gain and develop life skills, knowledge, and techniques through sport, using lessons learned at Up2Us Sports’ best in class training events.
- Perform data collection activities, as directed by your Up2Us Sports Program Manager.
- Act as a role model, gaining the respect and trust of the community and youth served.
Qualifications
- Some experience in a classroom setting with youth ages 8-14 years old.
- Covid vaccinated.
- Coaching organized sports preferred.
- Bilingual preferred.
- Reliable transportation to and from A Place Called Home and South Central. Sports League game day sites (EXPO Center and Slauson Recreation Center)
- Flexibility in daily schedule
AmeriCorps Eligibility & Requirements
- AmeriCorps is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent residents.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must have, or be working towards a High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Must have access to reliable transportation.
- Successful completion of criminal history background checks.
- Ability to perform all job requirements satisfactorily.
- Other requirements as required.
Up2Us AmeriCorps Coaches must complete the following requirements to ensure successful completion of the AmeriCorps program:
- Completion of the minimum required hours of service and training by the last day of coach contract.
- Attendance at the Up2Us Coach orientation.
- Completion of bi-weekly timesheets.
- Attendance at days of community service.
- Attend/participate in Up2Us Sports trainings, meetings, and special initiatives.
- Attend Coach Training Institute (date to be announced by Program Manager).
- Coaches must wear Up2Us Sports branded t-shirts provided by Up2Us Sports with AmeriCorps logo when coaching and at program sessions and events.
