Position: Head Varsity Sailing Coach

Location: MIT Boathouse/ 409 Memorial Dr, Cambridge, MA 02139

Season: Spring 2025 (March–May)

Schedule:

  • Weekdays: Monday, Wednesday, Friday (3:30-5:30pm)

Races on Wednesdays and Fridays

  • Compensation: Range $4,000-5,000 commensurate with experience

Position Summary

Newton Country Day School seeks an experienced and dedicated Head Varsity Sailing Coach for the spring 2025 season. The ideal candidate will develop athletes’ sailing skills, foster a love for the sport, and promote teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship in a positive and supportive environment. This position offers an exciting opportunity to mentor student-athletes and build upon a competitive and growing sailing program on Boston Harbor.

Position Requirements

Experience: Sailing experience required (competitive collegiate or club level preferred).

Coaching Skills: Prior coaching experience is a plus; enthusiasm for mentoring athletes of varying skill levels is essential.

Skills and Attributes:

  • Ability to teach fundamental sailing skills, tactics, and boat safety.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to motivate and engage athletes, creating a team-centered culture. Commitment to fostering teamwork, discipline, and respect.
  • Understanding of and respect for the mission of Sacred Heart education.

Certifications (Preferred): First Aid/CPR, SafeSport Certification, and US Sailing Level 1 Key Duties

  1. Athlete Development and Coaching

Teach and reinforce fundamental sailing techniques, including boat handling, sail trim, rigging, racing tactics, and safety.

Develop athletes’ technical and strategic skills through structured practices, drills, and on-water coaching.

Foster a positive and supportive team environment that emphasizes improvement, sportsmanship, and a love for the sport.

Assess athlete progress and provide constructive feedback.

  1. Practice and Regatta Management

Plan and lead organized and engaging weekday practices.

Prepare the team for regattas, including strategy development, boat assignments, and logistics.

Travel with the team to weekend regattas and oversee all aspects of race-day operations.

  1. Safety and Equipment Oversight

Ensure the safety of all athletes by adhering to proper water safety protocols and monitoring weather conditions.

Communicate any issues with rigging and handling of boats, sails, and related equipment to MIT, ensuring proper maintenance.

  1. Program Leadership and Communication

Serve as a mentor to athletes, building their confidence, skills, and passion for sailing. Communicate regularly with the Director of Athletics and athletes regarding schedules, updates, and expectations.

Promote a culture of teamwork, discipline, and Newton Country Day School pride. Collaborate with assistant coaches or team volunteers as needed to ensure program continuity and success.
