About the Role
The Oak Square YMCA is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Basketball League Coach to lead our youth basketball program. This role involves coaching and refereeing for children aged 4-12. The ideal candidate will have experience working with young children and a strong understanding of basketball fundamentals. The coach will be responsible for teaching basketball skills and facilitating games, creating an engaging and supportive environment for all participants.

Shifts:

  • Saturdays: 9:15 am – 1:00 pm
Session Dates:
  • Early Fall Session: September 14th – November 9th
  • Jr. Celtics Season: November 12th – February 23rd

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities
  • Instruct and coach children on basketball fundamentals, including skills and drills.
  • Referee games, ensuring fair play and adherence to the rules.
  • Session Structure: Begin each session with a brief lesson on drills, followed by facilitating gameplay among participants
  • Adapt to a schedule that may change based on enrollment.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and encouraging atmosphere.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.
  • Communicate effectively with children, parents, and staff.
Jr. Celtics Opportunity
The selected candidate will also have the opportunity to be involved in our Jr. Celtics season, a more competitive youth league with a specific structure to follow. This season offers a unique chance to work with young athletes in a more structured and competitive environment, enhancing their skills and understanding of the game.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Qualifications
  • Previous experience in basketball coaching, particularly with young children.
  • Familiarity with basketball rules and ability to referee games.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work Saturday mornings and early afternoons consistently.
  • Commitment to the entire duration of the Early Fall session and the Jr. Celtics season.
