About the position

The Harker School is seeking a JV Boys Basketball Assistant Coach for the 2024-2025 season, which runs from November 4th, 2024, to February 28th, 2025. The role focuses on the personal development of student-athletes, teaching them essential skills related to basketball, fostering a competitive spirit, and instilling values such as ethical behavior and good sportsmanship. The coach will also assist in developing leadership and life skills among the students.

Responsibilities

• Safely and effectively manage groups of students during practices and games.
• Organize practice plans and game strategies.
• Communicate effectively with the Athletic Director, staff, students, and parents.
• Stay informed regarding weekly sports emails and updates.
• Follow guidelines outlined in the Upper School Coaches Handbook.
• Attend coaches meetings and mandatory seasonal parent meetings.
• Ensure students participate in a fair and sportsmanlike manner.
• Maintain safety and decorum of students while traveling to away games.
• Stay knowledgeable about league, section, and state bylaws related to the sport.
• Provide guidance for middle and/or lower school programs where applicable.

Requirements

• At least 18 years of age.
• First Aid/CPR certified.
• 1 to 2 years of coaching experience preferred.
• Experience working with children preferred.
• Comfortable working with and around school-age children.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in or a background in basketball coaching.
