Position Summary
The Greenwich House Girls Basketball League (GHGBBL) Commissioner plays a key leadership role in overseeing a non-competitive, community-based basketball program for girls ages 8-15. This role emphasizes youth development, team building, and fun over competition. The Commissioner ensures that league operations run smoothly, from securing permits to coordinating practices, managing volunteer coaches, and maintaining clear communication with families.
Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Operations:
- Oversee the operations of the Greenwich House Girls Basketball League.
- Design and uphold the league’s core values of inclusivity, teamwork, confidence building, and non-competitive play.
- Develop season timelines, rosters, practice schedules, and game day logistics.
- Work with the Department of Education facilities or local parks departments to secure necessary permits for practices and games.
- Monitor all games and practices to ensure safety, fairness, and alignment with league goals.
- Work with Marketing and Communication for registration promotion, coaches, families, social media.
- Order uniforms, equipment, first aid, player gifts.
- Responsible for invoices for gyms, referees, orders.
- Recruit sponsors and foster relationships with current sponsors.
- Oversee the GHGBBL registration process and manage payments.
Parent & Family Communication:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for parents/guardians.
- Send out regular updates (email, text, or app-based) with schedules, reminders, and league announcements.
- Mediate and resolve concerns from families in a respectful, timely manner.
- Organize pre-season parent meetings and end-of-season celebrations.
Coach & Volunteer Management:
- Recruit, onboard, and support volunteer coaches with an emphasis on positive coaching practices.
- Provide coaches with league rules, child development guidance, and tools for team management.
- Host coach orientation sessions focused on building confidence, cooperation, and fun for all participants.
Player Development & Inclusion:
- Ensure all players are supported regardless of skill level.
- Promote equal playing time and participation across all teams.
- Encourage team spirit, sportsmanship, and peer mentorship among players.
Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure all staff and volunteers complete the required background checks and safety trainings.
- Uphold league safety protocols including first aid procedures and incident reporting.
Qualifications
- Experience working with youth, families, or in community-based sports programs.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Familiarity with recreational permits and scheduling logistics (preferred but not
- required).
- Passion for youth development, gender equity, and inclusive play.
- Ability to work evenings/weekends as needed for practices and games.
- Computer savvy (Excel, Word, and other programs).
- Must pass pre-employment background investigation including but not limited to employment history and criminal background check.
