Position Overview

The University of Michigan is seeking a visionary, experienced, and high-integrity Head Football Coach to lead one of the nation’s premier collegiate football programs. The ideal candidate will uphold Michigan’s longstanding tradition of excellence, develop student-athletes on and off the field, and compete at the highest level of the Big Ten Conference and NCAA Division I.

This individual will be responsible for the strategic leadership, culture, and overall success of the program, emphasizing competitive performance, academic achievement, character development, and compliance with all university, conference, and NCAA policies.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide championship-caliber leadership to the football program, including vision, strategy, and culture-building.

• Recruit, mentor, and develop student-athletes who thrive athletically, academically, and personally.

• Hire, manage, and evaluate assistant coaches and support staff.

• Design and implement effective game plans, practice plans, and player development systems.

• Foster a program that reflects integrity, discipline, accountability, and respect.

• Ensure full compliance with NCAA, Big Ten, and institutional regulations.

• Represent Michigan Athletics with professionalism in media, community events, donor relations, and program-wide initiatives.

• Work closely with Athletic Department leadership to manage budgets, facilities, and long-term program needs.

• Maintain a strong connection to alumni and key stakeholders.

Qualifications

Required:

• Significant coaching experience at the collegiate or professional level, including demonstrated success in leadership roles.

• Proven track record of developing and managing competitive football teams.

• Deep knowledge of NCAA rules and commitment to compliance.

• Exceptional leadership, communication, and program-management skills.

• Strong commitment to student-athlete well-being and academic achievement.

Preferred:

• Head coaching experience at a Power Five institution or equivalent professional experience.

• Experience recruiting and developing elite-level athletes.

• Familiarity with the Big Ten Conference and its competitive landscape.

• Demonstrated ability to engage supporters, alumni, and the broader community.
