About the role

As a Data Engineer at DataCamp, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing our data-driven decision-making and operational efficiency. You will manage and optimize our Datalakehouse on Google Cloud’s BigQuery, ensuring our leadership team has the precise and timely BI reports needed to steer the company towards its OKRs and vision. Your work will empower our engineering teams to make informed, data-driven decisions, boosting their project effectiveness and overall productivity.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure Accessibility: Maintain self-serve systems for teams to access data for informed decision-making, avoiding central bottlenecks.
  • Data Pipeline Management: Keep data pipelines and development processes operational and efficient.
  • Plan Improvements: Collaborate with the senior data engineer to enhance the data platform, development process, and testing procedures.
  • Ownership and Proactivity: Take charge of daily tasks and promptly address operational issues.
  • Capability Development: Focus 80% on planned quarterly OKR work and 20% on support work, achieved through automation.
  • Support and Collaboration: Act as a force multiplier by being approachable and assisting others with data engineering needs.
  • Technical Expertise: Utilize Python proficiency and advise on SQL best practices.
  • Data Handling Knowledge: Understand data ingestion, processing, and reverse ETL processes.
  • Data Governance: Uphold strong data governance practices and act as a gatekeeper for data platform security.

Qualifications

  • Is an experienced Data Engineer of between 1-3 years.
  • Has experience of data warehousing (e.g. Big Query or Snowflake) and data engineering related tools (e.g. Airflow, Looker, Metabase, Fivetran)
  • Has some knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, GCP or Azure)
  • Can develop in Python and write SQL
  • Understand Scrum and Kanban
  • Has excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Is interested in understanding and scaling complex data pipelines
  • Is interested in monitoring and self healing systems
  • Is highly organized with a flexible, can-do attitude and a willingness/aptitude for learning
  • Improves the team with code reviews, technical discussions and documentation
  • Is able to work collaboratively in teams and develop meaningful relationships to achieve common goals

It's a plus if

  • You have experience in DBT
  • You have experience in Docker, CI/CD, Kubernetes
  • You have experience of Data Marts
  • You have experience with Infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Ansible, etc)
  • You are passionate about data science and education
