Director of Engineering - Data
Fideo Intelligence
The Role
At Fideo, we transform massive, real-time and batch data into actionable intelligence to fight fraud and protect individuals and businesses worldwide. As Director of Engineering, Data, you’ll lead the design and evolution of the core systems that power our Identity Graph, integrating billions of signals across people, devices, and behaviors, and enabling customers to access these insights via APIs and batch pipelines.
This is a hands-on, technical leadership role with no direct reports initially, but with an expectation to grow and scale a team over time. You’ll set the vision and technical direction for our data platform, influence architecture and processes, and work alongside a small, high-performing engineering team to deliver resilient, scalable, and high-quality systems.
You’ll collaborate closely with Product, Data Science, and Platform Engineering to deliver systems that ingest, process, and serve data at scale, powering both real-time decisioning and batch enrichment capabilities for our customers.
Core Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Strategy
- Own the architecture and technical roadmap of Fideo’s data platform, including our Identity Graph, customer-facing APIs, and internal microservices.
- Design and evolve systems that integrate real-time and batch data sources at scale, ensuring data quality, consistency, and integrity.
- Champion engineering excellence, embedding resilience, security, and performance into every layer of the platform.
Hands-On Execution
- Lead the implementation of Fideo’s real-time-native Identity Graph, evolving the foundation into a robust, low-latency, high-scale production system that powers both customer-facing APIs and internal insights.
- Contribute to the design and development of distributed data pipelines and scalable APIs that process billions of records.
- Define patterns for building and operating microservices to support high-throughput and low-latency requirements.
- Build robust observability and testing practices, ensuring high availability (99.9%+ uptime) and SOC 2 readiness.
Collaboration & Growth
- Partner with Product to translate customer needs into clear technical designs and deliverables.
- Mentor engineers across the team, fostering technical growth and preparing to scale a team as the company grows.
- Support Sales conversations by providing technical expertise in customer conversations.
- Contribute to thought leadership through documentation, internal talks, and external presentations or publications.
Requirements
- Proven experience architecting and delivering large-scale data platforms and distributed systems.
- Deep expertise in both real-time (streaming) and batch data processing.
- Mastery of backend technologies: Java, Scala, or Go; REST APIs and microservices.
- Strong depth working with large data processing tools such as Spark, EMR, or MapReduce.
- Expert in NoSQL (e.g., ClickHouse, Scylla, Cassandra) and RDBMS (e.g., Postgres, MySQL, Aurora) at scale.
- Strong understanding of AWS and cloud-native architectures, including containerization (ECS/Kubernetes), IaC (Terraform/CloudFormation), and CI/CD pipelines.
- Skilled in building resilient, observable systems with tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and distributed tracing.
- Experience designing and evolving identity-related or graph-based data models is a strong plus.
- Excellent communicator with the ability to write clear documentation, diagrams, and presentations.
- Experience scaling teams and mentoring engineers preferred.
- Ability to reason about identity resolution, entity matching, and graph-based data at scale.
- Strong quantitative and analytical reasoning skills, with enough mathematical foundation to design and evaluate complex identity graphing systems.
