About the company: Halion is an advanced nanomaterials company based in Guelph, ON. With wide reaching applications from reflective displays to colour changing films, we are revolutionizing the way we interact with the technology around us.

At Halion you will play an integral role in R&D and product development. This primarily involves development of key specialty materials and working with other members of the team to help integrate your projects into a final product.

This is a full-time, in-person position at our Guelph headquarters.

Position Summary: We are looking for a highly collaborative Synthetic Organic Chemist who is an absolute whiz at synthesis and excited to apply their knowledge towards developing novel display materials. Someone who loves learning about physics, chemistry, and electronics through a hands-on approach. This individual should:

  • Thrive working in a small, fast-paced team making substantial contributions to the success of their projects
  • Be experienced with a wide range of synthetic and analytical techniques common in organic chemistry such as NMR and UV-Vis (DLS and Zeta potential an asset)
  • Be able to work with hazardous chemicals in a safe and responsible way as required
  • Be able to take a step back and manage a wide variety of tasks across different disciplines
  • Have strong experience with synthetic organic chemistry and a familiarity with polymer chemistry.
  • Be comfortable working through problems and figuring things out with minimal supervision
  • Experience with quantum chemistry calculations is a plus

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing development of product, including core R&D projects
  • R&D of core aspects of display material development, from initial design concepts to producing final products
  • Design and carry out experiments; collect, analyze, and interpret data; drive technical problem solving
  • Perform bench level laboratory work including synthesis of various display materials, and aid in the integration of materials into other aspects of the technology
  • Provide complex design reviews and feedback for improvement in scale-up to help transfer the technology from lab-scale development to commercial-scale production
  • Prepare reagents, operate analytical instruments and maintain high quality documentation
  • Assist with ongoing experiments and integration of results from collaborations
  • Write research papers, abstracts, technical reports and SOPs.
  • Train co-op students, contractors or other laboratory personnel; may supervise interns

Skills and Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or related field
  • Or Masters of Science in above fields and equivalent practical experience
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills are required
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects and changing priorities, make sound decisions under pressure, and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to rapidly learn new systems and procedures
  • Deep knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry, and a familiarity with polymer chemistry
  • Experience with Density Functional Theory calculations
  • Knowledge and experience with Python and MATLAB
  • Experience with electronics projects
