Hardware Engineer
Illumicell
Who We Are
illumicell AI turns live-cell imaging at the point of care into a versatile digital-biomarker platform. Developed in our Zurich R&D hub and refined at Harvard’s Pagliuca Life Lab, our AI-driven system began by redefining sperm analysis and now aims to bring the same real-time precision to any cell—blood, immune, or environmental—delivering on-the-spot diagnostic insights where they matter most.
We’re now looking for a Hardware Engineer to design, integrate, and deliver the mechanical and electrical backbone of our point-of-care imaging system—turning requirements into a robust, manufacturable, and regulatory-ready product.
Your Mission
Own the development of our hardware platform from concept to integration—mechanical, electrical, and system-level—ensuring performance, reliability, and compliance with medical-device standards.
What You’ll Do
Design & Development
- Translate system requirements into detailed hardware specifications and component selections.
- Design, prototype, and iterate mechanical and electrical subsystems, from CAD models to PCB-level integration.
- Integrate internally and externally developed modules into a cohesive, validated system.
Testing & Verification
- Plan and execute component- and system-level tests to verify fit, function, and performance.
- Analyze results, identify issues, and drive design improvements.
Collaboration & Oversight
- Manage and coordinate external development partners—define deliverables, review designs, and track timelines.
- Work closely with software, clinical, and regulatory teams to ensure seamless operation and readiness for submission.
Quality & Documentation
- Maintain accurate, version-controlled CAD models, schematics, BOMs, and test reports.
- Contribute to design control, risk management, and regulatory documentation (ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 60601).
What We’re Looking For
Education & Experience
- Master’s degree in Mechanical, Systems, Robotics, or related engineering field.
- Proven track record in delivering complex hardware systems; medtech experience strongly preferred.
- Hands-on experience with both mechanical (CAD, prototyping, tolerance analysis) and electrical domains (wiring, component selection, PCB-level integration).
- Familiarity with suppliers and manufacturing processes for low- to mid-volume production.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in CAD (OnShape, SolidWorks) and revision control practices.
- Strong grasp of electrical schematics, interfaces, and safety standards.
- Proficiency in Python or C/C++ is a plus; basic embedded or system admin skills are advantageous.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities at both component and system level.
Soft Skills & Logistics
- Clear communicator, able to coordinate across vendors and multidisciplinary teams.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and proactive.
- Fluent in English; German or French is a plus.
- Based in Zurich, with on-site presence and flexible remote days depending on project needs.
Why Join illumicell AI?
- Innovative Impact – Build cutting-edge hardware for AI-driven diagnostics with real clinical impact.
- Dynamic Team Culture – Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team at the forefront of medtech innovation.
- Growth Opportunities – Shape the hardware function and work on a system from early prototype to regulated product.
