The Role

We're growing our engineering team and splitting it into three focused domains: core, growth, and exam boards. This role is for the most technically demanding domain: exam boards.

The exam boards team owns all features related to national exams: the infrastructure, the reliability, and the product experience that schools and students depend on during the most important moment of the year. That means you'll be building and maintaining systems that handle up to 150,000 concurrent users, where performance, correctness, and stability aren't just nice-to-haves, they're the job.

You'll work across the full stack, but your strongest footing will be on the backend. You'll design and optimize database schemas, build robust APIs, and think deeply about concurrency, load handling, elasticity, and fault tolerance. You'll collaborate closely with product and design, own technical decisions within your domain, and have real impact in a small, fast-moving team.

About You

• You have 4+ years of software engineering experience, with a strong emphasis on backend development.
• You're comfortable designing and scaling systems under high concurrency and load. You've thought about connection pooling, query optimization, caching strategies, and what happens when things go wrong at scale.
• You write clean, maintainable code and care about the long-term health of a codebase, not just shipping fast.
• You're proficient with relational databases (PostgreSQL or similar) and know how to model data well, write efficient queries, and diagnose performance issues.
• You have solid experience with Node.js and REST API design.
• You're familiar with cloud infrastructure, deploying, monitoring, and operating services in production on AWS or a comparable provider.
• You have working knowledge of React, and you can work on the frontend when needed.
• You take ownership. In a small team, you'll often need to drive a problem from ambiguity to a shipped solution without a lot of hand-holding.
• You communicate clearly and collaborate well with engineers, product, and other stakeholders.

Nice to Have

• Experience building systems for high-stakes or time-sensitive environments (e.g., exam platforms, ticketing, live events, financial systems).
• Familiarity with load testing and stress testing.
• Experience with queuing systems or event-driven architectures (e.g., SQS, Redis, Kafka).
• Prior experience in an EdTech company or a strong personal interest in education.
• Experience working in a startup with a fast-paced environment.
