About the Role

As Associate Counsel, you will be a core member of a high-impact legal team operating at the intersection of fintech, AI, and global regulation. You'll help us navigate complex multi-jurisdictional legal landscapes, support our licensing and compliance infrastructure, and advise the business on legal risk across products and partnerships. This role is for a sharp, curious, and pragmatic lawyer who thrives in fast-moving environments and understands that great legal work enables great products.

What You Will Do

Regulatory & Licensing

  • Support and manage licensing applications, renewals, and ongoing regulatory filings across US states and international markets (50+ countries where Kredete operates).
  • Monitor evolving regulatory requirements in payments, money transmission, credit, and AI-driven financial services, and advise the business proactively.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies, outside counsel, and banking partners to ensure Kredete remains compliant across all active markets.
  • Identify and keep track of all periodical corporate filing obligations connected with Kredete’s operations in the US and other markets including but not limited to state and federal taxes, pension, insurance, and trademarks among others.
  • Provide support for any regulatory and licensing audits, amendments and related developments.

Commercial & Product Legal

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements including partnership agreements, vendor contracts, banking partner agreements, and API terms.
  • Advise product and engineering teams at Kredete Labs on legal issues arising from new features — including AI-driven agentic finance workflows, AI governance, credit products, and global card issuance.
  • Review and update user-facing terms of service, privacy policies, and disclosures to reflect product changes and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide legal structuring advice for integration of new products as well as the establishment or acquisition of new subsidiaries to maximize Kredete’s corporate and commercial objectives, eliminate or minimize risks to the furthest extent legally permissible, and create value for shareholders.

Risk & Compliance

  • Partner with the compliance function to develop and strengthen AML, KYC, and fraud-related policies and procedures.
  • Provide legal guidance on data privacy, cross-border data transfers, and applicable data protection regulations (GDPR, CCPA, and equivalents in emerging markets).
  • Identify legal risks across the business and help build scalable frameworks to manage them as the company grows.
  • Provide legal advice on responding to risk and compliance investigations, complaints and disputes.

General Counsel Support

  • Assist with corporate governance matters, board documentation, and equity-related legal work.
  • Manage outside counsel relationships, coordinate legal spend, and ensure consistent quality across engagements.
  • Handle ad hoc legal requests from across the business quickly and with good judgment.
  • Provide support for legal advice to management and shareholders on corporate issues, business structuring options and related matters.

Who You Are

You bring the right credentials and instincts:

  • JD from an accredited law school and active bar admission in at least one US jurisdiction.
  • 0–2 years of legal experience, including internships, clerkships, or early-career roles with exposure to fintech, payments, financial services, or regulatory law — either in-house or at a law firm.
  • Familiarity with US money transmission law, banking regulations, and consumer financial protection frameworks.

You think like a builder:

  • You understand that the best legal advice is clear, actionable, and delivered in plain English — not dense memos that slow teams down.
  • You are comfortable working in ambiguity and can make sound risk-based decisions without waiting for perfect information.
  • You're as interested in how Kredete's products work as you are in the law that governs them.

You have a global mindset:

  • You appreciate the complexity of operating across 50+ markets and are excited — not intimidated — by multi-jurisdictional legal questions.
  • Experience with or genuine interest in African, Latin American, or Southeast Asian financial regulatory environments is a strong plus.
  • You understand the communities Kredete serves and bring empathy to your work.

You operate well at scale:

  • You're highly organized, able to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously without dropping the ball.
  • You're a collaborative team player who builds trust quickly with cross-functional partners including product, engineering, compliance, and finance.
  • You're proactive — you spot issues before they become problems and flag them with a proposed solution.
  • Why Join Kredete
  • Opportunity to help shape the future of cross-border financial infrastructure
  • High-impact role with direct visibility into company growth and strategy
  • Small, high-performing teams with strong ownership and autonomy
  • Fast execution environment with meaningful career growth opportunities
  • Exposure to global markets, fintech innovation, and emerging payment systems
  • Collaborative and mission-driven culture focused on building products customers genuinely love
