Mechatronics Engineer at an energy startup
Mesodyne
Mesodyne is a startup company revolutionizing power generation with its innovative LightCell technology--using thermophotovoltaics to provide efficient, silent, reliable, long-endurance power from any fuel. By bridging the gap between batteries and internal combustion engines, Mesodyne's LightCell technology provides more than a 10x improvement in endurance for unmanned vehicles, wearables, and various other equipment. At Mesodyne, we are committed to bringing groundbreaking products to the industrial and defense sectors, with multiple existing contracts and numerous upcoming business opportunities.
We are looking for a Mechatronics Engineer to join our team and help create the next generation of power technology. This role is perfect for someone who thinks in terms of systems and is passionate about the seamless fusion of mechanical, electrical, and software engineering. You will be instrumental in the bring-up and validation of our LightCell prototypes—a complex system involving fluidics, thermal management, custom electronics, and intelligent control.
Responsibilities:
- Integrated System Assembly: You'll take a hands-on lead in assembling and integrating electromechanical prototypes that include fluid systems, thermal components, custom PCBs, and embedded controllers.
- Control Loop Tuning and Validation: You will implement and tune PID control loops for pumps and heaters, working at the intersection of firmware and physical system response to optimize performance.
- Multi-Domain Troubleshooting: Diagnose and solve complex issues that span the entire system, whether the root cause is a mechanical tolerance, a noisy sensor line, or a bug in the state machine.
- Develop Automated Test Systems: You'll design and build test setups with the appropriate mechanical fixtures, data acquisition hardware, and control scripts (Python) to validate system performance.
- System-Level Design Input: Leverage your integration experience to provide feedback to the entire engineering team, influencing future designs for easier assembly, testing, and debugging.
Qualifications and skills:
- B.S. or M.S. in Mechatronics, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Demonstrated project experience bringing a complex electromechanical or robotic system to life is required.
- Hands-on experience across the three core mechatronics pillars: mechanical assembly, electronics, and embedded programming.
- A portfolio showcasing previous hands-on projects is highly encouraged.
Location:
This position is based at our facility in Somerville, MA.
