Hardware Engineering Lead at an energy startup
Mesodyne
Mesodyne is a startup company revolutionizing power generation with its innovative LightCell technology--using thermophotovoltaics to provide efficient, silent, reliable, long-endurance power from any fuel. By bridging the gap between batteries and internal combustion engines, Mesodyne's LightCell technology provides more than a 10x improvement in endurance for unmanned vehicles, wearables, and various other equipment. At Mesodyne, we are committed to bringing groundbreaking products to the industrial and defense sectors, with multiple existing contracts and numerous upcoming business opportunities.
This is a role for a passionate and experienced hardware developer ready to guide a team through its next stage of growth. As a hands-on leader, you will be a "player-coach," splitting your time between mentoring a talented team of engineers and contributing directly to the design, build, and testing of our next-generation LightCell prototypes. If you have deep technical expertise and a desire to lead a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced environment, this is a unique opportunity to make a significant impact.
Responsibilities
- Lead and Mentor: You will lead and grow our hardware team of Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, fostering a collaborative, hands-on culture through rapid prototyping cycles.
- Set Technical Direction: You'll set clear priorities for the team, manage prototype development projects from concept to completion, and ensure technical risks are identified and mitigated.
- Be a Player-Coach: You will actively contribute to hands-on engineering work, including mechanical design, analysis, fabrication, and troubleshooting of complex hardware and integrated systems.
- Drive Design Excellence: You will conduct regular design reviews to ensure integrity and manufacturability, and you'll maintain high standards for documentation and CAD models.
- Bridge to Manufacturing: You'll champion the transition of our prototypes to scalable designs, overseeing both in-house and outsourced manufacturing processes.
- Communicate and Report: You will manage project communication regarding status, progress, and technical challenges to the executive team, customers, and external partners.
Qualifications
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
- 5+ years of experience in hands-on hardware development, including design (CAD proficiency is essential), analysis, fabrication, and testing.
- Proven experience leading or mentoring engineers. Formal management experience is not required, but a demonstrated aptitude for leadership is key.
- A track record of successfully taking hardware concepts through the prototyping stage.
- Broad technical knowledge, including familiarity with electrical engineering principles sufficient to guide EE team members in integrated system design.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to interact effectively with leadership, team members, customers, and vendors.
- A portfolio showcasing previous hardware projects is highly encouraged.
