Role Overview
We’re looking for a mission-driven Senior Backend Engineer to design and build core services that ingest, model, enrich and serve healthcare data at scale. You’ll own critical backend systems end-to-end, from API design and data models to reliability, observability, and security. You will collaborate closely with AI/ML, Product, and Clinical Partners.

You’ll own critical backend systems end-to-end, from API design and data models to reliability, observability, and security. You will collaborate closely with AI/ML, Product, and Clinical Partners.

Key Responsibilities
Product & Platform Development
- Design, implement, and operate backend services (APIs, job runners, data pipelines) for ingestion, curation/labeling, enrichment and data access.
- Iterate quickly with Product to deliver high-quality increments; write well-tested, maintainable code.
- Own service architecture and data models; drive scalability, performance, and operability.
- Define and meet SLOs; build robust observability (distributed tracing, metrics, alerting).
- Build privacy-first systems for PHI handling (access controls, encryption, audit trails) aligned with HIPAA and industry best practices.
- Partner with leadership to advance SOC2-ready practices (change management, CI/CD controls, incident response runbooks).
- Implement and evolve healthcare data integrations (FHIR/HL7, DICOM where relevant), mapping and validation, and versioned schemas.
- Champion data quality: idempotency, lineage, reproducibility, and clear SLAs for data services.
- Work closely with AI/ML to productionize models via stable interfaces and evaluation hooks.
- Contribute to engineering standards, design docs, and code reviews; mentor peers and elevate the team’s bar.
- Optimize system reliability, performance, and cost efficiency.
- Implement processes and tools that scale with the platform and team.
- Monitor engineering metrics to ensure uptime, performance, security and cost-efficiency.
- With guidance from the VP of Engineering, build secure, compliant, and high-trust systems to meet the unique needs of healthcare providers.
- Advocate for and build ethical AI practices.
- Ensure our AI solutions prioritize patient privacy and data security standards.
Must-Haves
- 7+ years of backend or platform engineering experience (or equivalent impact) building cloud-native services at scale.
- Proven ability to design APIs and data models, reason about distributed systems, and ship high-quality services end-to-end.
- Hands-on experience with reliability engineering (SLOs, alerting), secure coding, and production operations.
- Strong communication: clear design docs, thoughtful trade-offs, and collaborative execution with product/AI partners.
- Healthcare domain experience: FHIR/HL7, DICOM, healthcare data privacy.
- Security & compliance exposure: HIPAA safeguards, SOC 2 practices, audit logging.
- Experience with ML/AI in production (batch/online inference, evaluation, safety/ethics).
- Early-stage experience and bias to action; ability to thrive with autonomy and ambiguity.
