Position Summary
The Director, People and Culture plays a pivotal role in shaping and elevating the organizational culture at Chrysalis.
Reporting to the Executive Director, this position provides strategic leadership and expert guidance on people strategy, organizational development, and diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring these priorities are embedded across all levels of the organization. The ideal candidate is a forward-thinking, people centered leader who is detail oriented, proactive, and deeply committed to fostering a positive, inclusive, and high performing workplace culture.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Employee Relations: Ability to provide strategic guidance in employee relations, fostering a positive work environment through conflict resolution, performance management, compliance, employee engagement, and cultural development.
- Human Resource Planning, Reporting and Surveying: Lead strategic workforce planning, tracking HR metrics, and gathering employee feedback to support informed decision-making.
- Job Evaluation and Compensation: Lead the evaluation of job roles and establish equitable compensation levels by assessing responsibilities, required competencies, and market benchmarks to ensure internal consistency and external competitiveness.
- Employment Legislation: Ensure organizational compliance with employment legislation by staying current with applicable labour laws, providing informed guidance on legal requirements, and implementing policies and practices that protect both the organization and its employees.
- Benefits Administration: Oversee and administer Chrysalis’ employee benefits program, ensuring all plans remain competitive, compliant with legislation, and aligned with organizational needs and workforce priorities.
- Succession Planning: Lead the development and implementation of succession planning strategies across all levels of the organization, working closely with the Executive Director to identify critical roles, assess talent readiness, and ensure a strong pipeline of future leaders.
- Orientation, Training and Development: Lead the development and administration of a consistent and engaging orientation program and collaborate with departmental leadership to ensure training and development initiatives are aligned with staff needs, program requirements, and organizational priorities.
- Health, Safety, and Wellness: Develop, implement, and oversee all health and safety policies, processes, and plans at Chrysalis to ensure full compliance with relevant legislation and standards. Manage all interactions with the Workers’ Compensation Board of Alberta (WCB), including claims, reporting, and return-to-work processes. Lead and support organizational wellness initiatives and programs that promote employee wellbeing and a healthy workplace culture.
- Payroll: Oversee payroll processes, ensuring accurate and timely compensation, compliance with tax regulations, and proper documentation for all employees.
- Leadership: Provide strategic leadership, coaching, and partnership to senior leaders and direct reports, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement to support organizational success and culture transformation.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Employee Engagement: Ability to build strong, professional relationships and engage effectively with employees at all levels.
- Communication and Influence: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the capacity to influence, collaborate, and foster trust across the organization.
- Human Resources Expertise: In-depth knowledge of HR best practices, employment legislation, and regulatory requirements to ensure compliance and mitigate organizational risk.
- Organizational Skills: Strong ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain structure, and deliver high quality work in a dynamic environment.
- Conflict Management and Investigations: Skilled in resolving conflicts, conducting fair and thorough investigations, and supporting a positive, collaborative workplace culture.
- Strategic Leadership: Proven ability to design and execute people strategies that align with organizational goals, strengthen culture, and drive measurable results.
- Attention to Detail: Consistently produces accurate, highquality work with careful review and precision.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, Social Sciences, or a related field.
- Human Resources Certificate or Diploma, or an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Experience:
- 8-15 years of progressive HR experience in increasingly senior roles.
- 3-5 years of payroll administration.
- Previous leadership or supervisory experience.
- Experience selecting and administering employee benefits programs.
- Experience supporting or administering wellness programs (asset).
- Experience with succession planning frameworks and models.
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement new initiatives, with strong changemanagement skills.
Technical skills:
- High proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
- Experience working with payroll systems such as Payworks (asset).
- Ability to conduct needs analyses, design training programs, and facilitate learning sessions.
- Strong problem solving, investigative, and data-driven decision making skills.
Knowledge:
- Working knowledge of Alberta Employment Standards and Alberta Human Rights legislation.
- Advanced understanding of HR best practices across the full employee lifecycle.
- Knowledge of Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) processes.
- Working knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety.
- Strong understanding of privacy legislation and appropriate handling of confidential information.
