Senior Data Engineer
Orion
Location: Hybrid (Denver, CO)
Type: Full-time
Working at Orion
Orion builds AI systems that forecast physical and geopolitical risk in real time for corporate, government, and defense clients. We pull in data from geospatial sources, open-source intelligence, and economic signals to track what’s happening — and what’s about to happen.
We’re a small team with a strong seed round, and we’re looking for a Senior Data Engineer to help build systems that ingest, process, and structure data. This includes everything from crawling and parsing websites, to working with H3 geospatial formats, to delivering structured output that our users actually use.
You’ll be working on problems that aren’t abstract — if something breaks, a real person can’t see the risk they need to act on.
What You’ll Do
- Build and maintain ETL pipelines that deal with a mix of structured and messy data
- Handle large volumes of incoming data from APIs, crawlers, and real-time streams
- Work directly with H3 and other geospatial indexing formats
- Write production-grade code, not experiments
- Set up monitoring and alerts so we know when something fails
- Collaborate with ML, engineering, and product teams to ship things quickly and reliably
What We’re Looking For
- Strong Python skills
- Experience building and scaling ETL pipelines
- Familiarity with geospatial or spatiotemporal data (especially H3)
- Comfortable integrating flaky APIs and scraping unreliable sources
- You care about stability, reproducibility, and don’t ignore failures
- You’re focused on building systems that do something real, not just ticking boxes
Bonus Points For
- Rust or Go experience (used in parts of our pipeline)
- Familiarity with H3 and how to work with hex-based indexing
- Prior startup or small-team experience
- Any experience with threat intelligence, security, or defense data
You’ll like this role if:
- You’d rather ship than theorize
- You like working on real-world systems, not toy problems
- You don’t need a big team or perfect process to be effective
- You want ownership, not micromanagement
Compensation
Competitive salary, meaningful equity, and the chance to work on something that actually matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who else works at Orion? We’re a small team of engineers and operators with backgrounds in F500, defense, and VC-backed startups. You’ll be working closely with Andy (CTO), Georgy and Shubhangi (Founding Engineers).
What stage is Orion at? We’re a Techstars and VC-backed dual-use AI company. We raised a strong seed round and are building the core platform and team now.
What’s the work culture like? We’re in-person in Denver 2–3 days/week. We move fast and prioritize momentum. Everyone ships. There are sprints where raw hours matter — especially when we’re pushing something critical. But we’re not here to burn out. We want intensity, not chaos.
What’s the interview process? 2–3 interviews. No take-homes. No leetcode. We’ll talk through real work and whether you want to do it here.
