Single-use plastics are one of the greatest sources of waste, pollution, and hazard to us all. The process of producing and incinerating single-use plastics gives rise to over 850 million metric tons of CO2 every year. In addition, after use, these plastics don't disappear. Of all plastic ever produced 92% ends up in landfills and in the environment where they break down into smaller particles; micro & nano plastics, which are taken in by animals, fish, and in humans. Unfortunately, the existing recycling infrastructure is not the panacea we hoped for and many other bio-based materials have drawbacks that keep them from being implemented at scale. This is why Outlander Materials, a clean biotech start-up, developed UnPlastic; it is our answer to single-use plastics. UnPlastic is a circular product, made from food industry sources, by-products and brewery waste. Its composition means it is functional, compostable, and totally non-plastic. It will never break down into micro- or nanoplastics. What makes UnPlastic a genuine alternative for single-use plastics and fit for commercial use, are its properties: flexible, lightweight, semi-transparent, colorless, and odorless. It has an excellent barrier against fats, oils, and oxygen, helping to preserve products. With UnPlastic we will offer an alternative to commercial single-use plastic packaging that minimizes plastic waste and addresses the global problem of food waste!
