Full Stack Engineer (MERN, Backend-Heavy) – Paperstack (Remote)
🚀
Join a fast-growing fintech company that's scaled significantly in the past year. You'll play a critical role in building the backend systems and product infrastructure that power our growth.
100% remote. Work from anywhere.
This role suits someone who lives in the backend, is comfortable jumping into the frontend when needed, and wants to ship things that matter.
At Paperstack, we provide working capital financing to e-commerce brands, purpose-built for how modern commerce scales. We're growing our engineering team and looking for a Full Stack Engineer with a strong backend focus.
Why Paperstack
We're a US-based, remote-first fintech backed by top-tier investors and programs including Google for Startups and Techstars. Over the past 12 months, we've more than doubled our team and we're continuing to grow.
You'll be working on US markets with a team of sharp, hungry people who hold each other to a high bar. Salary starts at $2,000 USD and is paid in USD.
You'll work directly with our CTO, with real visibility into technical decisions and architecture from day one. You won't be waiting on tickets. You'll be building things that directly shape how the company operates and grows.
Our team comes together once a year for an offsite. Past trips have taken us to Morocco and Europe.
The Role
As a Full Stack Engineer, you'll design and build backend systems, maintain RESTful APIs, jump into React when needed, and help improve performance, reliability, and engineering standards across the platform.
🌎
Fully Remote — This is a 100% remote position.
📅
Application deadline: Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis through July 18, 2026.
Email subject line: Please use Full Stack Engineer Application.
What You'll Be Doing
Design and build backend systems using Node.js and Next.js API routes, MongoDB Atlas and GCP
Develop and maintain RESTful APIs that power our platform
Work across the full stack in a single Next.js codebase: React on the frontend, server-side logic and data layer on the backend
Identify and fix performance bottlenecks and technical debt: profiling, query optimization, scalability fixes
Contribute to code reviews and help maintain engineering standards, testing discipline, and clean architecture across the codebase
Work with modern cloud infrastructure: GCP Cloud Run deployments, CI/CD pipelines, and production monitoring
Qualifications
5+ years of experience as a full-stack or backend engineer, ideally with production systems at scale
Strong proficiency in Node.js and MongoDB: you should be comfortable designing schemas (Mongoose or similar ODM)
Experience with Next.js (App Router) or comparable full-stack React frameworks;
Solid understanding of RESTful API design, backend architecture, and system design fundamentals (data modelling, caching, concurrency)
Working knowledge of React (hooks, state management, component architecture);
Comfortable with Git-based workflows, code review culture, and writing maintainable, well-tested code
Strong communication skills in English: you’ll work directly with a US-based team, async and in real time
Self-learners and non-traditional backgrounds are welcome. If you’ve built things and can show your work, GitHub, side projects, open source contributions, we want to hear from you
