Mission Operations Engineer
PierSight Space
Role: Mission Operations Engineer
Industry Type: Space Technology
Location: Bengaluru
Employment Type: Full-time
About the Role:
We are building a next-generation satellite mission architecture, and you will be the first member of our Mission Operations team. This is a rare opportunity to shape how our satellites are operated—from ground segment setup to real-time flight operations and anomaly investigations.
You will work across systems engineering, avionics, software, and mission design teams to develop procedures, test spacecraft behaviour, and operate missions in orbit. If you enjoy taking ownership, learning fast, and working across disciplines, this role is for you.
Fresh graduates with strong engineering fundamentals and hands-on project experience (student satellite teams, UAV/rocketry, robotics, controls, software) are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to mission CONOPS, commissioning plans, and nominal/contingency procedures.
- Develop and maintain operational checklists, command scripts, and step-by-step runbooks.
- Support pre-launch readiness: ground segment setup, link tests, end-to-end rehearsals.
- Participate in mission rehearsals, day-in-the-life simulations, and operational readiness tests.
- Verify spacecraft behaviour using hardware-in-loop simulations or flatsats.
- “Test like you fly” by validating procedures against actual flight scenarios.
- Execute console operations during routine passes and critical events (launch, LEOP, commissioning).
- Monitor telemetry, assess subsystem health, and respond to anomalies.
- Perform command sequencing, uplink operations, and data verification.
- Perform telemetry trending and detect out-of-family values.
- Assist subsystem engineers in root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Document anomaly reports, lessons learned, and operational improvements.
- Support configuration, testing, and upgrades of mission control and T&C systems.
- Develop internal tools for telemetry visualization, automation, and health monitoring.
- Ensure smooth interfaces between spacecraft, ground stations, and mission software.
- Work closely with systems, avionics, software, and GNC/ADCS teams.
- Provide feedback from real ops to inform future spacecraft and software design.
- Participate in post-pass reviews and operational planning meetings.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 0-2 years experience, strong fundamentals, curiosity, and discipline:
- Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Computer Science, Controls, or related engineering fields.
- Solid understanding of orbital mechanics and satellite subsystems (T&C, C&DH, ADCS/GN&C, Power).
- Hands-on experience through university satellite teams, UAV/rocketry teams, robotics clubs, or engineering projects.
- Basic Python programming and experience with Linux/bash.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, especially for procedures and reports.
- Ability to follow structured procedures with attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have, Not Required):
- Internship or project experience in satellite operations, GNC, avionics, or systems engineering.
- Familiarity with mission control systems, ephemeris tools, or ground station operations.
- Experience developing scripts, telemetry tools, or dashboards.
- Exposure to hardware testing, HIL testing, or satellite flatsats.
- Knowledge of RF basics and T&C link behavior.
- Experience with JIRA, Git, or similar tools.
- Soft Skills & Attitude
- Calm and focused under pressure during real-time operations.
- Fast learner with a willingness to understand multiple subsystems.
- Ownership mindset—comfortable with ambiguity and responsibility.
- High operational discipline and reliability.
- Ability to work occasional off-hours during critical mission phases (launch, LEOP, anomalies).
Why Join Us?
- Be the first Mission Ops engineer—help define processes, tools, and culture.
- Work across the full mission lifecycle: design → testing → launch → real-time ops → anomaly resolution.
- Deeply cross-disciplinary role with exposure to systems, software, avionics, payloads, and ground segment.
- Fast growth path into Mission Ops Lead as the team scales.
- Opportunity to shape India’s next generation of space mission operations infrastructure.
