Food & Nutrition Services Assistant Job Description

Job Title: Food & Nutrition Services Assistant (5.0 hrs.) / Technician (7.5 hrs.)

Exemption Status: Nonexempt

Primary Purpose

To support the Food & Nutrition Services (FNS) Department by performing meal preparation, service, cashiering, and cleaning duties at the school campus. Requires individuals with the ability to maintain records of amounts of food prepared and leftover for program accountability. Adhere to a high level of safety and sanitation standards.

Qualifications

Education/ Certification:

  • Accredited Senior High School Diploma or valid equivalent (USA equivalency) preferred
  • Three months’ food service experience preferred
  • Effective planning and organizational skills
  • Must be able to read, write, and comprehend the English language to perform functions

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Responsible for preparing food and beverages for breakfast, lunch, and supper and other programs according to standardized recipes and guidelines to serve students and staff in a safe and efficient manner
  • Complete meals according to the department’s standardized recipes; check and report the availability of food and supplies to the Cafeteria Manager in advance of food preparation
  • Properly use and maintain equipment in the preparation and service of meals, reporting malfunctions promptly to the Cafeteria Manager
  • Perform cashier, dishwashing, cooking, prepping, and meal-serving duties as instructed by the Cafeteria Manager. Keep count of meals served and monies collected and record the temperature of food, refrigeration, and freezer equipment, as directed.
  • Comply with sanitation standards as established by the City Health Department and FNS.
  • Assist with proper storage of food and supplies as instructed by the Cafeteria Manager.
  • Set up, monitor and replenish the serving station, as required
  • Serve meals to customers as directed by the Cafeteria Manager, ensuring correct portion sizes, meal requirements, and time standards as established by the department
  • Read labels and use appropriate chemicals to clean and sanitize equipment, work area, and utensils/trays
  • Clean cafeteria and/or kitchen area, which includes picking up trash, sweeping and mopping floor, cleaning equipment, putting trash cans in proper location, and wiping down tables/seating
  • Attend training (s) as scheduled
  • Perform all other duties and tasks assigned
  • All federally funded incumbents of this position must comply with time and effort reporting requirements through personnel activity reports or periodic certification, as appropriate

Tools/Equipment Used: Ovens, tilting skillets, institutional dish machines, serving equipment, walk-in freezers and coolers, reach-through refrigerators and warmers, mixers, immersion blenders, steamers, hot water dispensers, food preparation and serving utensils, ladders, carts, racks, hand trucks, dollies, cash register, computer, office equipment

Posture: Frequent pushing, pulling, overhead and below waist reaching, bending, stooping; frequent use of hands and fingers to grasp, handle, and manipulate food; frequent use of upper and lower body to sweep, mop, and clean floors; visual acuity to identify basic colors, peripheral vision, depth perception and adjust focus

Motion: Continuous standing and walking briskly, on hard surfaces, unassisted, for length of scheduled work hours

Lifting: Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds without assistance, 30-50 pounds with assistance, and more than 50 pounds with appropriate assistance

Environment: Work inside; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, humidity, wet conditions, and loud noises; occasional exposure to high places, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; exposure to risk of electrical shock; work around machinery with moving parts

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress, the rapid pace required during meal service
