Custodian Coordinator Job Description

Job Title: Custodian Coordinator

Exemption Status: Non-exempt

Reports to: Operations and Facilities Rental Manager

Primary Purpose

Supervise custodial staff and ensure building and grounds are cleaned using routine procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficient building operations.

Qualifications

Education/Certification

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid class C Texas driver’s license and proof of insurability with District insurance carrier

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures
  • Strong organizational, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and coordinate personnel to accomplish tasks
  • Broad knowledge of school housekeeping
  • Ability to operate and train in heavy cleaning equipment and the proper use of cleaning supplies
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English
  • Bilingual Spanish, preferred
  • Ability to utilize technology resources relevant to the position

Experience

Supervisory experience with custodial staff, preferably in an educational environment

Major Responsibilities And Duties

Program Management

  • Work cooperatively with principals and supervisors to ensure a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations.
  • Collaborate with Operations and Special Events Manager in matters pertaining to cleaning and maintaining buildings.
  • Complete administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required.
  • Provide an inventory of cleaning equipment and supplies at all campuses as needed
  • Provide routine preventive maintenance of equipment and document an emergency repair system.
  • Report and manage repairs through the Facilities online workflow system

Personnel Management

  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate custodial staff and make recommendations relative to assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
  • Complete annual evaluations for custodial staff.
  • Conduct on-the-job training as needed and ensure that new employees receive training and orientation for job responsibilities.
  • Counsel employees as needed or document behavior and conduct.
  • Oversee work schedules and procedures for the regular custodial care of all district facilities and special custodial projects and make work assignments as needed.
  • Promote teamwork and high standards among staff.

Other

  • Respond in a timely manner when contacted regarding urgent situations or emergencies (during or outside of normal business hours)
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible; and serve as a role model for staff, students, and the public
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Safety

  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform duties, including lifting and climbing. Operate tools and equipment in accordance with established safety procedures. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidents immediately to supervisors, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.

Tools/Equipment Used: Computer and peripherals, office equipment, hand tools, buffer, stripper, wet/dry vacuum cleaner, shampooer, cleaning chemicals

Posture: Frequent sitting, standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting

Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladder, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, use of computer mouse, overhead reaching

Lifting: Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds without assistance, 30-55 pounds with assistance, and more than 55 pounds with appropriate assistance, on a daily basis

Visual: Use of depth perception; distinguishing basic colors

Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; on rooftops; frequent exposure to hot and cold temperatures and humid conditions, electrical hazards, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise and vibration; work around moving objects and vehicles, ladders, scaffolding, pallet jacks and lift equipment; occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours; frequent driving; frequent districtwide travel
