HYDROGEN STACK ENGINEER (FOUNDING ENGINEER)
SAILWINT
Key requirements:
- Valid work permit for Germany
- Located in Berlin or open to (temporary) relocation to Berlin (hybrid work mode)
About SAILWINT
SAILWINT is on a disruptive impact mission to build sailing wind turbine ships that produce and deliver low-cost, clean and highly scalable energy/hydrogen from the ocean. Our purpose is to overcome energy dependency, the fossil fuel age and lower significantly the cost and availability of clean energy/hydrogen to boost economic and social development.
SAILWINT is an early-stage startup funded by Techstars DeepTech Berlin 2024. Read more about SAILWINT in this founder spotlight interview.
Key Responsibilities
As a Founding Hydrogen Stack Engineer, you will co-lead the identification, selection, engineering, development and integration of all hydrogen stack related aspects of the SAILWINT ships. You will:
- Support operations and execution of industry partner pilots with existing SAILWINT prototypes
- Enhance existing prototypes based on pilot learnings and test campaigns with your hands-on maker mindset
- Identify, evaluate and select of market-available industry-proven hydrogen stacks including desalination stages, electrolyzers (PEM, AEM), batteries, compressors, and storage for different scale-up versions of SAILWINT ships
- Conduct capacity factor analysis based on wind prediction models to optimize the hydrogen stack dimensioning
- Collaborate with SAILWINT naval architecture team to integrate the hydrogen stack into SAILWINT ship structural loads calculations using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and into overall system integration
- Conduct safety and reliability analysis and liaise with regulatory bodies to design fail-safe systems to meet maritime regulations and hydrogen industry standards based on an existing relationship with the BAM
- Plan and oversee the sourcing and integration process, work with hydrogen system OEMs, resellers, and EPC service providers to ensure high standards in build quality and regulatory compliance
- Configure the hydrogen stack control system to optimize energy production, storage and offloading from the ship to onshore or offshore storage facilities and pipelines
- Collaborate in system integration of SAILWINT’s hydrogen stack into naval architecture and overarching semi-autonomous digital control system
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with a focus on hydrogen technologies
- 3-5+ years of experience or PhD in full stack PEM electrolyzer hydrogen engineering, with a strong focus on innovation e.g. experience with AEM technologies, experience in desalination and offshore is a strong plus
- Proven project experience in prototype/pilot development that showcase hands-on maker skills and a passion for disruptive innovation
- Familiarity with maritime systems and (offshore) wind turbines is a plus
- Strong problem-solving and team work skills and ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic startup environment
- Ability to work closely with the founding team in a hybrid work setup in Berlin with an entrepreneurial mindset
Compensation and Benefits
- Competitive startup engineering salary package and founding engineer equity options
- Opportunity to co-build disruptive energy startup from the early stage to IPO
- Become part of an impact mission to overcome energy dependence, the fossil fuel age and boosting economic and social development with lower-cost energy/hydrogen at scale
