Seasats is a small but rapidly growing company building autonomous boats for commercial, defense, and ocean science customers. The vehicles we build are strong and durable enough to carry sensors on multi-month ocean missions, but are also light enough to be handled by 1-2 people without cranes or heavy equipment.
The company is located in sunny San Diego, CA and is composed of talented engineers, builders, tinkerers, and business people. Internally, our shop work culture is hard working, but fun and quite flexible. Externally, we’ve built a reputation for being professional, knowledgeable, and dedicated to getting the job done. Role: Composite Technician
Salary Range: $60,000-$90,000 + stock options and benefits
Rather than making a highly specific job post asking for x years of experience, we’ve left this post and its salary range pretty broad. If you apply, we’ll see how you would fit into our organization and offer compensation accordingly. Minimal experience will lead to an offer on the lower end; killer experience/credentials will put you on the higher end.
Introduction
Since our founding, we’ve grown from some engineers with prototypes and big aspirations to a team of ~25 people producing sophisticated products at a steady clip. We’re looking to bring on a motivated and reliable composite technician to help keep production humming.
About You:
You like using your hands, working with teammates, and making things you're proud of. You like to move quickly, but you know when to take your time and get every detail right. You also have:
- Experience with composite manufacturing to include wet and infusion laminations, bagging, sanding, finishing, etc
- Quality workmanship and general shop skills: measurements, power tools, machining, PPE, etc
- A focus on efficiency and a desire to get as much done in a day as possible
- Project experience - we’d love to hear about what you enjoy working on in your spare time!
- The ability to read instructions, learn new processes, and train other people
- A cheerful, can-do attitude
The Details:
Since launching our flagship vehicle, the Lightfish, we’ve focused on accelerating our production speed while maintaining high quality. As a member of our composites team, you'll build, bond, and finish fiberglass parts for our hulls. Some specific tasks you might encounter include:
- Laminating parts of all types
- Preparation steps (cutting lamination kits, mold prep, etc.)
- Wet laminations, infusion laminations, vacuum bagging
- Demolding & finishing steps
- Secondary bonding of parts
- Creating jigs, tooling, documentation and processes to improve the production process
- Working with other teams to complete other machining, fabricating, and testing tasks.
- Keeping coworkers up to date on inventory and timeline tracking
- Constantly looking for ways to improve the efficiency and quality of our assembly processes
If you join, along with your salary you’ll receive:
- Stock options
- Competitive insurance (including a 99% employer-covered Gold HMO plan or other options)
- 401k matching up to 4% of salary
- 4 free lunches per week
- Access to an employee activity fund
- A pet-friendly office
We’ll help you ramp up with introductory projects and regularly take time to discuss where things are working and what needs to change. We’re also big on personal freedoms: if you’re on top of your responsibilities and want the afternoon off to surf or spend time with friends and family, go for it! We have flexible hours, a flexible time off schedule, and a personable, kickass work culture. We want someone who’s stoked to contribute in and to this environment.
If you apply, we’ll ask for a resume and answers to the following questions:
- Why are you excited about joining Seasats? [1-3 sentences]
- What is your most relevant previous experience? [1-3 sentences]
- What composite object are you most proud of creating? [1-3 sentences]
- If you can, please attach a picture
- Approximately what day would you be available to start this role?
Please note that we are currently unable to sponsor employment visas, so candidates must be independently authorized to work in the United States.
We appreciate diverse perspectives and life experiences, so we encourage women, minorities, and people of all backgrounds to apply. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
