About us

Trexo Robotics is enabling mobility by building powered wearable robots. Our first product is a robot for children with movement disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, and it allows kids to walk, in many cases, for the first time in their lives. The device is currently being used by hundreds of families and the best hospitals across North America.

We are constantly working towards building mobility solutions for all. At Trexo Robotics, you will find a flat organization where you can work with highly optimistic, low ego, and exceptionally talented individuals who look forward to solving hard problems.

About the job

We are looking for a highly motivated AI Robotics Intern to join us for an 8- 12 month term. Your primary focus will be on shaping our AI roadmap and developing initial proof-of-concept models that leverage AI to enhance our robotic systems. This internship will be hands-on, combining research and practical implementation, significantly contributing to the next evolution of our adaptive gait technology. You will have the unique opportunity to leverage a treasure trove of over 100 million steps of data collected from real users.

This position will be hybrid in nature.

We are open to Master’s and PhD students with relevant experiences. While preference might be given to full-time availability, we invite applications from candidates who can work part-time, min 3 days a week.

About you

You are passionate about AI and robotics and eager to apply cutting-edge technology to real-world problems. You thrive in small teams working on impactful solutions and are excited by the challenge of personalizing robotic assistance to individual users' needs. You have a strong foundation in machine learning, enjoy prototyping, and can independently navigate technical problems by asking the right questions and seeking answers through experimentation.

What you will do:

  • Collaborate on designing an adaptive gait model using machine learning and reinforcement learning.

  • Develop initial AI prototypes using real-time sensor data (joint angles, velocities, accelerations, and torques).

  • Experiment with deep learning models (e.g., LSTMs, Transformers, CNNs) to predict user intent and optimize robotic gait assistance.

  • Explore reinforcement learning algorithms for real-time adaptive control.

  • Leverage internal datasets and simulations to validate AI models before real-world implementation.

  • Review Trexo internal data, perform cleanup or restructuring as needed to ensure data integrity and effectiveness for AI model training.

  • Define and measure performance metrics, including interaction forces, user intent recognition accuracy, and user comfort.

  • Document and present findings clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Master’s/PHD in Computer Science, Robotics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Experience with machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch).

  • Familiarity with deep learning architectures (RNN, LSTM, CNN) and/or reinforcement learning frameworks.

  • Familiarity with control theory and its robotics applications.

  • Proficiency in Python and comfort with software version control (e.g., Git).

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Interest in robotics and human-machine interaction.

  • Skills in debugging robotics or other electromechanical systems.

  • Familiarity in documenting requirements and creating comprehensive functional specifications.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical concepts.

  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills (able to piece together lots of information and condense it to something useful).

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with biomechanics, gait analysis, or exoskeletons.

  • Previous experience with robotic simulations (Gazebo, PyBullet, MATLAB SimMechanics).

  • Knowledge of medical devices or assistive technology.

  • Experience with AWS.

  • Familiarity with ROS.

Interview Process

  • Introductory video call to discuss the opportunity and the company with HR.

  • Interview with Hiring Manager

  • Team fit interview with the CTO and Engineering team members.

  • Background check and offer.

Work Authorization: Please note that we are unable to provide visa sponsorship or support work authorization applications. We can only consider candidates who already have the legal right to work in the location they are applying for.

AI in Recruitment: At Trexo Robotics, we use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support our recruitment process. AI helps with tasks like resume screening, drafting job descriptions, creating interview questions, and occasionally sourcing candidates. Final hiring decisions are always made by our team. Our goal is to use AI responsibly to streamline administrative tasks, improve candidate experience, and maintain fair, unbiased hiring practices aligned with industry standards.
