Design-Focused Mobile Engineer
Design
San Francisco, CA, USA
Work location and eligibility
- This role is remote in Canada or in-person in San Francisco.
- For remote work in Canada, candidates must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents; visa sponsorship is not available.
- TN visa sponsorship is available only to Canadian citizens relocating to the San Francisco office.
About the role
We are looking for a product-minded mobile engineer who takes ownership of the complete customer experience, not just the code. Work directly with the founders to understand user problems, challenge assumptions, shape solutions, and ensure design, application behaviour, and payment workflows come together into a coherent, reliable product.
Own an early-stage fintech mobile app end-to-end across design and engineering, working directly with the founders to ship native experiences that support real-world banking and payment workflows for construction businesses.
The team is evaluating native iOS and Android applications alongside React Native and welcomes engineers with native mobile experience, not only React Native backgrounds. The app involves NFC tap-to-pay, biometric authentication, and deep payment-backend integrations. This is not a WebView or reskin role: product design, platform capabilities, reliable build pipelines, and high-quality mobile execution are core parts of the position.
What you’ll do
- Own the mobile app from Figma and product decisions through App Store and Play Store delivery.
- Build tap-to-pay, card management, transaction, onboarding, and other payment features used by field workers.
- Build native mobile features using Swift/SwiftUI or Kotlin as appropriate to the platform, and help evaluate native versus React Native implementation choices. Own platform integrations, mobile build tooling, provisioning, and code signing; React Native bridge work applies where React Native is used.
- Lead mobile design-system decisions covering typography, spacing, motion, information hierarchy, and interaction quality.
- Use Cursor and AI-assisted development workflows daily to accelerate implementation and create more time for product judgment, validation, and quality. Remain accountable for how the complete product works.
- Make high-impact technical and design decisions in a small, fast-moving startup environment.
- Turn ambiguous customer needs into clear end-to-end workflows, including edge cases, errors, and recovery paths.
- Make practical trade-offs across user experience, technical complexity, and delivery speed.
- Validate shipped features through user feedback and product outcomes, then iterate to improve the complete experience.
Required qualifications
- Demonstrated ownership of a shipped product or feature, with the ability to explain the user problem, your product decisions, and the outcome, not only the implementation.
- Portfolio evidence that clearly demonstrates design ability and showcases an app personally designed and shipped. This may be a personal website or a directly shared app example.
- 5+ years building production mobile applications overall across iOS, Android, or cross-platform development.
- Strong hands-on mobile engineering experience through native iOS/Android development or React Native, including navigation architecture, performance profiling, efficient lists, gesture handling, and animations. React Native experience is not required for candidates with a strong native mobile background.
- Hands-on experience with native platform APIs, debugging mobile applications, and production app-store release processes. Candidates should be comfortable working beyond web wrappers or framework abstractions.
- Comfort with the native layer: Swift/SwiftUI or Kotlin, Xcode, Android Studio, code signing, provisioning, and mobile build tooling.
- Strong product-design judgment and confidence working in Figma.
- Hands-on experience using Cursor and AI tools to ship production software.
- Experience with Linear or a similar modern project-management tool.
- Legal authorization to work in Canada, or eligibility for TN status for an in-person role in San Francisco.
Nice to have
- React Native experience, including bare workflows, native modules, Hermes debugging, TurboModules, Fabric, Reanimated, or Skia. These are optional, not prerequisites for native mobile engineers.
- Experience shipping fintech or payments applications involving NFC, EMV, tokenization, secure enclaves, or related technologies.
- Experience designing, shipping, and maintaining an independent mobile app in production.
- Startup experience and comfort working in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment.
What’s offered
- Competitive salary and equity.
- Remote or hybrid flexibility for Canada-based candidates, or in-person work in San Francisco.
- Professional-development budget and conference attendance.
- Significant ownership and influence over the mobile product.
Interview process
- 15-minute founder call.
- 1-hour technical and design video interview reviewing the candidate’s website and shipped apps.
- If hired, the first 2 weeks are onsite with the founder.
