Volunteer for a startup empowering youth grassroots leaders in East Africa ⭐

Lightup Impact builds a youth-led grassroots movement for sustainable change in East Africa. By connecting, equipping, and empowering young grassroots leaders, we enable them to co-create and implement solutions that address inequalities in gender, health, education, and climate at the community level.

In Kenya alone, there are over 50,000 local non-profit organizations, yet 90% of early-stage founders fail without guidance and resources. Grassroots leaders—those directly tackling poverty, youth unemployment, and climate change—often struggle with visibility, credibility, and a lack of access to sustainable financing. Without support, these vital community-led initiatives are at high risk of collapse, leaving innovative solutions unrealised.

The Solution: Lightup Impact provides a comprehensive ecosystem to ensure grassroots leaders regain confidence and scale their impact. Our approach focuses on four key pillars:

  • Visibility: We amplify local initiatives through networks and partnerships to ensure they are seen by the right stakeholders.
  • Credibility: We provide mentorship and showcase success stories to build reputational trust with global funders.
  • Capacity: Through our Skills Development Program, we train leaders in management, program design, and fundraising to grow sustainable organizations.
  • Funding: We support fundraising strategies and connect leaders with donors through referrals and networking events.

By centering the youth movement, Lightup Impact ensures that solutions are locally led, sustainable, and transformative.

Role (Volunteer, unpaid): Community Manager

Role Description:

What you’ll do:

  • Manage Lightup Impact’s social media platforms and create engaging content.
  • Support membership management and engagement of grassroots leaders via whatsapp and email
  • Support the team in coordination of online zoom community events.
  • Strengthen overall community visibility and engagement.

Skills we’re looking for:

  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Experience in social media management.
  • Experience in community management and design/video editing is desirable but not required.
  • Experience in content creation for linkedin, instagram, facebook and twitter.
  • Strong organization, project management and collaborative skills.
  • Willingness to learn and a can-do changemaker attitude.
