Volunteer for a startup empowering employees to drive change through sustainability 💚

GreenKPI

We enable companies to operationalize sustainability with staff-driven actions, metrics tracking, and interactive reports.

GreenKPI addresses the major barriers preventing companies from incorporating sustainability into their operations: time, cost, and lack of knowledge. Organisations often struggle with the "how-to" of change, the expense of hiring consultants, and the risk of staff turnover hindering progress.

GreenKPI's solution is a B2B SaaS platform that integrates sustainability directly with company operations. It empowers staff to drive change using hundreds of pre-loaded sustainability actions, alongside the ability to create custom actions. The platform includes a project management system to ensure initiatives are actionable, measurable, and repeatable. Crucially, GreenKPI provides automated, interactive reports and dashboards. These reports combine completed actions with uploaded environmental, social, and economic metrics, allowing companies to easily track performance, share progress via updated URLs, and demonstrate their story of action and change.

Role (Volunteer, unpaid): AWS Cloud Engineer

Role Description: GreenKPI is a sustainability technology company providing carbon emissions tracking software for Australian manufacturers. We're building V4—a modernised production system combining Django backend with AWS Cognito authentication and containerised deployment—to meet our government contract requirements.

What You'll Work On

You'll contribute to a live production environment serving government contract customers, working with:

  • AWS Infrastructure: IAM, ECS Fargate, ECR, S3, RDS, ALB, CloudWatch
  • Container Orchestration: Docker and containerised Django deployments
  • Production Security: AWS Cognito integration, HTTPS, government compliance standards
  • Real DevOps Workflows: Infrastructure as code, CI/CD pipelines, database migrations

What You'll Gain

  • Hands-on experience with AWS production infrastructure
  • Real-world DevOps workflows in a live system
  • Portfolio-worthy project with measurable climate impact
  • Exposure to government contract security requirements
  • Collaborative experience with distributed team (Australia/India/Argentina)
  • Clear documentation and structured oversight

The Challenge

We're executing a V4 development project with a March 2025 government deadline. Our AWS contractor is implementing Terraform IaC, ECS Fargate containerisation, and security hardening. We need additional AWS-skilled volunteers to support this critical work and learn alongside experienced practitioners.

Commitment & Structure

  • Time: Flexible volunteer hours, integrated with your schedule
  • Duration: Short-term engagement through March 2025 V4 launch
  • Support: Working alongside AWS contractor and experienced technical coordinator
  • Legal: NDA and IP assignment (standard for government contract work)
  • Management: Structured via Linear project tracking and Slack coordination

Ideal For

  • AWS practitioners wanting production infrastructure experience
  • DevOps engineers building their portfolio
  • Climate tech enthusiasts with containerisation skills
  • Developers interested in sustainability impact

Tech Stack

Django (Python), PostgreSQL, AWS (ECS Fargate, Cognito, RDS), Docker, GitLab CI/CD, Terraform

Why This Matters

Australian manufacturers need accurate emissions tracking to meet regulatory requirements. Your AWS expertise directly enables sustainability reporting that drives real environmental impact.

Time Commitment: Volunteer 7-9 hours per week for 1-2 months remotely.
