Volunteer for a startup helping to reduce CO2 emissions & water pollutions 💚

BioBright helps the maritime industry to reduce CO2 and water pollution by using algae cultivation and monitoring systems.

The maritime industry is a significant contributor to global environmental challenges, particularly regarding CO2 emissions and water pollution. BioBright is committed to tackling these urgent issues through its innovative algae-based technologies designed to reduce emissions and improve water quality within ports.

Algae-Based Technology for CO2 Absorption BioBright cultivates algae inside ports, which naturally absorbs CO2 from the surrounding environment. Only 400 grams of algae can absorb 800 grams of CO2 every hour, making it a highly effective solution for carbon reduction in maritime ecosystems. By scaling algae installations in key port areas, BioBright helps ports significantly reduce their carbon footprint.

Role (Volunteer, unpaid): Cyber Security Specialist

Role Description: As a Cybersecurity Specialist, your role will be to help BioBright strengthen its security protocols, optimize data storage and sharing infrastructure, and ensure customer and company confidential data are fully protected in compliance with UK, EU, and international cybersecurity frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Data Storage & Access Architecture: Review current data storage setups and implement secure access controls (RBAC/ABAC) to restrict unauthorized access, viewing, and exfiltration.
  2. Vulnerability Assessment & Threat Mitigation: Conduct security audits to identify potential system vulnerabilities and implement defenses against cyber threats and industrial espionage.
  3. Secure File Sharing & Data Loss Prevention (DLP): Design and enforce strict secure file-sharing protocols, implementing DLP tools, digital rights management (DRM), and audit logging to monitor and control downloading, copying, and sharing of sensitive assets (financials, pitch decks, product specs).
  4. Data Privacy Compliance: Ensure all handling of confidential customer and business data aligns with UK GDPR, EU GDPR, and international data protection standards.

Key Skills & Qualifications

  1. Data Loss Prevention (DLP) & DRM: Hands-on experience configuring DLP solutions and Information Rights Management (IRM) tools (e.g., Microsoft Purview, Virtru, Seclore) to track, watermark, and remotely revoke access to confidential files.
  2. Identity & Access Management (IAM): Proficiency in setting up Zero Trust architecture, multi-factor authentication (MFA), and granular Role-Based Access Control (RBAC).
  3. Vulnerability & Threat Analysis: Ability to perform system audit assessments, threat modeling, and vulnerability scans to proactively close attack vectors.
  4. Cloud & Infrastructure Security: Knowledge of secure cloud storage practices (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and encrypted data transmission (at-rest and in-transit encryption using AES-256, TLS 1.3).

Compliance & Governance Skills

  1. Regulatory Knowledge: Deep understanding of UK GDPR, EU GDPR, ISO/IEC 27001, and basic NIST Cybersecurity Framework principles.
  2. Security Auditing & Logging: Experience configuring centralized audit logs and SIEM monitoring to maintain complete visibility over user actions and file downloads.

Impact

Your work will help ports and marinas access actionable environmental intelligence, enabling them to reduce emissions, improve water quality, enhance biodiversity, and support a more sustainable maritime industry.

Time Commitment: Volunteer 10+ hours per week for 6+ months remotely 💻
