Volunteer for a startup helping to reduce CO2 emissions & water pollutions 💚
BioBright helps the maritime industry to reduce CO2 and water pollution by using algae cultivation and monitoring systems.
The maritime industry is a significant contributor to global environmental challenges, particularly regarding CO2 emissions and water pollution. BioBright is committed to tackling these urgent issues through its innovative algae-based technologies designed to reduce emissions and improve water quality within ports.
Algae-Based Technology for CO2 Absorption BioBright cultivates algae inside ports, which naturally absorbs CO2 from the surrounding environment. Only 400 grams of algae can absorb 800 grams of CO2 every hour, making it a highly effective solution for carbon reduction in maritime ecosystems. By scaling algae installations in key port areas, BioBright helps ports significantly reduce their carbon footprint.
Role (Volunteer, unpaid): Mechanical Engineer
Role Description: Support the engineering team in designing mechanical features for an automated water monitoring station. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will improve and design mechanical features that enable our system to withstand the harsh conditions of coastal environments, ensuring real-time water quality data in ports and marinas is delivered reliably to our public platform.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design dynamic mechanical setups (e.g., tethering, guide rails, or counterweight pulley mechanisms) that accommodate tide-induced height shifts while keeping sensors submerged at a constant depth (~1 meter).
- Manage cable routing and strain relief between quay-mounted control units and floating/submerged sensor housings.
- Select materials, coatings, and sealings that resist biofouling, saltwater corrosion, and mechanical friction.
- Create and update 3D CAD models and production drawings for components and sub-assemblies.
Key Skills & Qualifications:
- Mechanical CAD Proficiency: Experience with 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or Inventor).
- Marine / Coastal Environment Knowledge: Familiarity with the challenges of saltwater corrosion, wave action, and biofouling.
- Mechanism & Cable Management Design: Experience designing mechanisms for motion, dynamic strain relief, cable management, or floating structures.
- Basic Structural & Stress Analysis: Ability to evaluate mechanical loads caused by tides, currents, and buoyant forces.
- Hands-on Prototyping: Comfortable prototyping and testing physical concepts prior to deployment.
- Impact: Your work will help ports and marinas access actionable environmental intelligence, enabling them to reduce emissions, improve water quality, enhance biodiversity, and support a more sustainable maritime industry.
Time Commitment: Volunteer 10+ hours per week for 3-5 months remotely 💻
