About You and The Role
Zipline’s New Product Introduction (NPI) team is hiring a Technician who will be responsible for prototype and engineering validation builds of new systems, as well as troubleshooting and maintaining this hardware throughout testing. This is a multifaceted role in both welding end electromechanical assembly. The technician will have at least some proficiency in welding, and is committed to learning TIG and MIG welding of both aluminum and steel from experienced welders to attain a certification in AWS D9.1 Sheet Metal Welding. The technician is expected to execute builds with few written instructions. You must also be comfortable working with schematics, creating process instructions from verbal directions, and working closely with Design Engineering personnel to validate your own work. You will also assist in training and certifying manufacturing team members or external vendors as new assemblies reach maturity in the development process. You will be expected to check the quality of operations and meet schedules set by the NPI Supervisor. The ideal candidate for this role is someone with extensive problem solving experience, and a solid understanding of how to work safely with electromechanical systems. The position will be located primarily at our Headquarters in South San Francisco with some time spent at our R&D facility in Half Moon Bay, California.
What You'll Do
- Perform MIG and TIG welding to join, fabricate, and repair metal components
- according to project specifications.
- Set up fixturing and plan welding sequences to avoid warping and misalignment
- Set up and adjust welding equipment, including selecting the appropriate welder
- settings, tools, gasses, and wire to ensure the highest quality weld
- Inspect and ensure the quality of welds, identifying and addressing defects or irregularities to meet industry standards and project requirement.
- Support early prototyping and testing activities by building and maintaining hardware.
- Maintain NPI line(s) in a neat and orderly fashion.
- Perform complex and precise electro-mechanical assembly work and be able to work independently once a task is assigned.
- Make connections with other employees, learn how teams interact, and work fluidlywith the NPI and Engineering teams.
- Provide design and assembly feedback to Engineering, as well as work closely with them to troubleshoot issues that come up during builds.
- Own the success of specific Zipline product development efforts.
- Meet aggressive deadlines, and provide support as needed during testing.
- Handle a variety of operations, including troubleshooting and rework requiring a sufficient understanding of the functional operation of the items assembled as well as the finished product.
- Work from complex and detailed schematics, drawings, and/or verbal and written instructions and specialized fixtures/test equipment.
- Develop initial Manufacturing Process Instructions.
- Have a quick and flexible approach to problem solving, task juggling, and collaboration.
- Update production records / test results, record process improvements and manufacturability suggestions.
- Communicate build results, ideas, and problems to supervisor and Design Engineers.
- Identify discrepant materials/components verbally and in writing to the NPI Supervisor.
- Escalate build issues through the proper channels and drive to resolution.
- Coach, train and effectively lead new technicians on builds when multiple technicians are required to complete projects.
- Be comfortable working on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Be comfortable with working long hours when required to achieve deadlines.
- Follow all safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe working environment, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to company safety policies.
What You'll Bring
- High School degree or equivalent. AS Degree preferred.
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience in prototyping, assembly, or manufacturing of electro-mechanical components and basic experience in welding.
- Basic understanding of electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Direct experience with reading and understanding manufacturing instructions and mechanical drawings with basic understanding of electrical systems.
- High level of craftsmanship and attention to detail married with the ability to work quickly.
- Quality focused with the ability to manage your time across multiple competing tasks and priorities.
- Able to lift 30-50 pounds on a daily basis and to maintain a safe working environment.
- The ideal candidate has IPC Certification.
- Must have competency in at least one of the following areas:
- Deep knowledge and experience with welding and metal fabrication
- Process documentation
- CAD
- Electronics prototyping
- Machining
- Composites
