Optomechanical Engineer

Position Summary

Labby is seeking an Opto-Mechanical Engineer to join a dynamic technology company, working with a dedicated team of engineers and scientists bringing novel milk quality testing technology from development to production.

The Opto-Mechanical Engineer will be primarily responsible for mounting and fixture design of optical components involved in our spectrometers and imaging systems, with the goal of achieving robust

operation in challenging environments such as dairy farms. The successful candidate will have experience with optical system design focused on design for manufacturing (DFM) and expertise working with a range of optical components such as illumination, spectrometer and camera subsystems. Designs are expected to follow current best practices for DFM, and reliability/quality (including adherence to relevant

safety/regulatory/certification requirements).

Key Responsibilities

● Responsible for the design of optomechanical systems involving compact spectrometers and camera

modules

● Fixturing and ruggedization of optical mounts that can withstand variations in temperature and other

environmental factors

● Develop modular optical subsystems that speed up assembly and calibration

● Work with the mechanical engineering team to design mounts for sensors and illumination

components using standard casting methods and determine the acceptable tolerances

● Monitor optical quality of signals from field tests and from real-time customer data and devise

strategies to calibrate devices in the field

● Lead projects independently, and collaborate with a multi-disciplined team of scientists, engineers, and

technicians

● Create technical documentation for the product including performance and specifications documents

● Work with vendors and manufacturing partners, manage projects and delivery milestones

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications

● Master's degree in Physics, Optical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering

● 5+ years hands-on design and development of optomechanical systems

● Proficient with optical analysis tools such as Zemax

● Proficient in DFM and manufacturing process development

● Experience with process fixturing and optical system calibration

● Proficient with laboratory instrumentation such as spectrometers, optical detectors, other optical

sensor systems

● Experience with environmental testing of optical systems such as thermal tolerance testing

Additional Qualifications

● Experience with ANSYS package for FEM simulations would be a plus.

● Experience with spectrometer design, MEMS based optical sensors, UV-Vis and NIR spectrometer

systems, FTIR instrumentation

● Experience with Solidworks and Python are desirable
