Scout is building a new way to see and operate in space: with a new paradigm of data empowering every satellite to make space safer. We are a rapidly-growing team; we are deploying real solutions to orbit over the next 2 years; and our work will transform the face of spaceflight. We are looking for people that bring excitement and energy to our organization, are curious and eager to learn, and want to help drive our programs forward.

As a Head Embedded/Electrical Engineer, you will play a crucial role in overseeing the design, development, and maintenance of embedded and electrical systems for Scout’s electro-optical payloads. You will be responsible for leading a multidisciplinary, hybrid team, ensuring that projects align with technical and business objectives, and driving innovation in embedded technologies. Your contributions will impact the organization's ability to meet market demands, comply with industry standards, and maintain a competitive edge.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead electrical and embedded system architecture design for on-orbit sensor data capture and processing
  • Understand and design for space environments constraints with an emphasis on minimizing size, mass, power, and cost
  • Contribute technically to embedded and electrical design and development, including the migration of novel data and image processing algorithms to FPGA
  • Contribute technically to designing, building, and testing electrical and embedded control systems for electro-optical payloads, including precise mechanism control.
  • Build, lead, and mentor a team of embedded and electrical engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, technical expertise, and collaboration.
  • Contribute to the organization’s long-term goals by aligning embedded and electrical systems development with business objectives.
  • Perform thermal and radiation analysis of board-level components
  • Generate documentation to support manufacturing, assembly, integration, and test

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field: Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering
  • Experience designing firmware and boards that have flown in space
  • Strong knowledge of techniques for avoiding and mitigating single event upsets and latchups
  • Understanding of power and thermal constraints within hosted payloads
  • Environmental test plan development and implementation for electronics
  • Familiarity with watchdogs, data reduction, and memory management
  • Familiarity with machine learning concepts
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex concepts and technical information clearly and concisely.
  • Extensive experience in a leadership or management position.
  • Must be eligible to hold a clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expert in VHDL, C++, and python
  • Familiarity with PCB design, especially for space environments
  • Familiarity with encryption techniques
  • Background in camera systems, image processing, and optical testing
  • Strong understanding of in-space radiation environments
  • Experience designing and programming motion control systems

Don't fulfill all the qualifications listed above? If you still feel like you might be a good fit, please feel free to APPLY ANYWAY. We believe in a well-rounded team, and this sometimes means that someone with out-of-context knowledge can contribute just as well as someone with very explicit alignment with our capabilities needs stated.

Our positions are based in the Reston, Virginia area, with much of our team operating in a hybrid or remote fashion. Our preference is for candidates in or around this area (or willing to relocate) as we scale our facilities and engineering team and provide more opportunities to work and collaborate in-person. Remote employees will be required to travel for onsite work and in-person meetings.
